Remember the magi, the scholars that saw a new star in the heavens marking the birth of a king?
Stars hang in space in such exotic distances from us that we measure their distance to us in light years, which is how far light travels in one year, 5.87 trillion miles. The range of stars we can see without a telescope are 4-2000 light years away. We don’t need to do the math to know that even the closest star’s light took a mind boggling time to reach earth.
What day in the creation story did God make the stars?
What day in the creation story did God make man?
How many centuries later did God separate the nation of Israel to be His own?
A star shone in the universe long before the earth was born, but the timing of the light’s travel, perfectly calculated and planned, guaranteed its arrival the night Jesus was born. This light led the magi to find the king predicted in the stars, the king of the Jews.
What does this mean for us?
God worked out gifts for us to arrive precisely on time. God created plans to redeem far in advance of the need for redemption.
What reliefs and joys can you thank him for planning?
What pain, what mess, what lip biting situation in your life needs turning inside out, needs God’s miraculous hands?
His redemption will come when the precise calendar and clock moment arrives, no sooner, no later.
Just as we don’t need to understand a multi stepped calculus problem to trust the correct answer, as long as someone else does, neither do we need to understand how all the steps of events in our lives will come out right in the end. We trust in the great Mathematician. We trust our Heavenly Father who loves us more than the stars in the universe.
Look in the night sky this time before Christmas when you take out the garbage, come home from work, or simply need to refocus. Contemplate the travel of starlight and let it remind you that God knows the beginning to the end and all that lies between. He planned gifts of hope and futures for us. He planned redemption of all things for those who love him and are called according to his purpose. Those people are you and me.
How has God’s timing been demonstrated in your life?
